Chapter 18

His earlier annoyance at Reese’s questioning somewhat dimmed, Cash sat next to her on the couch. “Why do you think they’re having an affair?” he asked Elijah.

“Phone records. And the reason we didn’t notice this before is because we only looked at the Kingstons’ phones. I looked into Lippman’s phone records and she consistently calls and texts with another number. A burner phone which was bought with Mila Kingston’s credit card.” He muttered something about how if you’re going to be sneaky that you needed to commit, to not half-ass it.

“How many calls and texts?” Reese asked.

“Thousands. They text every day, all throughout the day. And I remembered that Joelle told you that Mila Kingston disappears every Wednesday for a doctor’s appointment. Their phones—the burner, Lippman’s and Mila’s—all hit the same tower around that time. Not that that’s definitive proof of anything, but their phones are also silent for a couple hours on Wednesdays. No texting, calling, et cetera.”

“If she’s using a burner, it would explain why you didn’t find anything when you cloned her phone,” Cash murmured to Reese.

Frowning, she bit her bottom lip as she stared at her phone. Finally she said. “Okay, thanks. I’m not sure what we’re going to do with this, but it’s really good. Have you seen anything on the surveillance cameras?”

“Nothing usable. I haven’t been able to see Mila and Ben in the same room. I’m hoping to get them on camera, maybe admit something, but nothing that ties into this yet.” He was silent for a moment, then said. “At least Aubry’s mom will be able to bury her daughter. It’s not a great outcome, but I’m guessing she was dead before you guys got there—before Joelle even contacted us. There’s nothing you could have done.”

“Yeah, I know,” Reese murmured, still frowning. “I’ll call you if we need anything. Thanks for this.”

As she ended the call, she sighed and leaned back on the couch.

“Where do we go from here?” Cash asked. When he’d been in the army, he’d been told what doors to break down and done it. Or what enemy combatants to target, and done it. Being involved in an investigation was a lot different and the parameters of this one had just changed.

Or shifted, really.

Reese scrubbed a hand over her face. “I don’t know yet. Let’s head back to our cabin and wait for the cops to talk to us. How were they with you guys?” She looked between the other two.

“They barely talked to us. Detective Lippman and another detective. Ah, Frank Conroy, they were the two who showed up,” Rowan said. “They just took our names and wanted to know what happened, compare it to Mila Kingston’s story I guess.”

“Did Detective Lippman take her statement?” Cash asked.

“Nope.” Adalyn shook her head. “I didn’t think about it at the time, but they didn’t interact much. Lippman took my statement and cordoned off the body, but Conroy took Rowan’s and Mila’s. It was all professional.”

Reese stood. “Okay, then…we’re going to head back to our cabin in case the detectives stop by.
